Willem Mengelberg

Willem Mengelberg succeeded Willem Kes as the director of the Amsterdam Concertgebouworkest in 1895.
In 1898 he became the main teacher for piano at the Amsterdamsch Conservatorium.

On 6 September of the same year, he made his appearance at the solemn inauguration ceremony of the Dutch Queen, Wilhelmina, in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. "Mengelberg was in charge of the musical accompaniment of this ceremony", Mrs E. Bysterus Heemskerk writes in her book about Mengelberg. "For this occasion he composed a Prelude on the Dutch national hymn, the "Wilhelmus", which was played during the royal procession.
The length of the piece had to correspond correctly with the duration from the Palace to the church, while after that the national hymn was sung by members of the Toonkunstkoor."
It is probable that the chorale "Nun danket alle Gott" was also written for this occasion.
