Sigfrid Karg-Elert

Sigfrid Karg-Elert studied with Jadassohn in Leipzig, for some time with Edvard Grieg, and with Max Reger.

In 1919 he became a teacher of composition, piano and music theory at the conservatory in Leipzig.
Initially, as a composer, he was strongly influenced by Debussy, Skriabin and Schönberg. Later, he returned to the more traditional way and used the classical forms such as the passacaglia.

The Ciacona con variazioni Op.142 nr.7 came into being in 1931 as part of the Sempre Semplice for Organ. This 'simplicity', however, will be experienced by the listener rather than the performer.
Karg-Elert dedicated the work to his British colleague and friend, J. Stuart Archer.
