Gustav Merkel
Gustav Merkel studied organ in Dresden with Johann Schneider, who, in his turn, had been a pupil of J.S. Bach.
He was an organist at several churches in Dresden and from 1864 he was the court organist at the Katholische Hofkirche.
He had a good reputation as an organist and composer of works for organ.
Besides nine organ sonatas, three organ fantasies and many choral preludes, he wrote courses of instruction for organ, for instance de Orgelschule Op. 177.
The Concertsatz es-moll Op. 141 was published in 1881.
