Albert Renaud

Albert Renaud was a pupil of César Franck and Léon Delibes.

As an organist he played in the Eglise Saint-François Xavier in Paris as well as in the church in St. Germain-en-Laye.
After that, he devoted himself entirely to the art of composing.
Besides works for piano and for orchestra, a Messe Solennelle, an opera and ballet music, he wrote a number of organ works.

The Toccata in D minor, dedicated to Guilmant, was a popular piece in the repertoire of Jan Zwart and later Feike Asma.
The main motif, returning in major in the final measures in the pedal, seems to be taken from the song "Ah, ça ira", which has its origin in 1793, when the rebellious population marched from Paris to Versailles.
